Campaign Jumps Past Last Year's Total

Employees in local workplaces, employers, individuals and students, have led the local United Way annual fundraising campaign past last year’s total.

“Reaching $620,000 is a whooping $100,000 over this time last year” says executive director, Karen Turchetto, “but we still have our work ahead of us over the next couple of weeks.”

Turchetto emphasized that reaching this years goal of $857,000 will be a monumental increase, never experienced by a single United Way of this size in Canada. “This would sure boost S.D. & G with some great publicity about what a great community this is and certainly one you would want to be part of and proud of.“

“We still have to raise over $200,000 dollars and only a few weeks left, but we know that our division chairs, volunteers are working tiredly to make this happen.

Campaign manager Elaine Myers said, “There are many workplace campaigns reporting their campaign totals now. It’s obvious our community sees the need to increase funding for our 18 agencies to get their job done and I have no doubt that we’ll pull through…. Time is short but increased publicity and elbow grease will hopefully encourage donations in order to end of the campaign ”

Funds raised by the campaign will support vital social programs and services. The United Way funds 18 members’ agencies and additionally 32 different programs and services including Success By 6. Last Year United Way funding benefited 29,000 people in the S.D. & G area. Those numbers are expected to rise again next year.
