The Cornwall and District Immigrant Services Agency (CDISA) provides settlement services and assistance to immigrants and newcomers in the five United Counties of Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry and Prescott-Russell.

Settlement services include providing information and orientation regarding Canadian culture and way of life, referrals to services that are available in the community, housing, health and schooling of children, assisting clients with filling out application forms and providing translation and interpretation service.

CDISA also advocate for clients, offer support groups and provide resources to newcomers who are in need of more information and help to be able to integrate and settle in their new community. Health units, schools, hospitals, etc…have been contacting CDISA to assist their newcomer clients for more specific and specialized services that are specific to newcomers to Canada.

In addition, CDISA provides employment assistance to newcomers and immigrants who are looking for a job or are interested in furthering their career or skills training. An outreach and employer liaison goes to the rural areas to do needs assessment and do intake every Wednesday and whenever there is a need, to assist people who are looking for employment and who are facing cultural and linguistic barriers in the course of their job search. Job search workshops are available, helping people to make resumes, networking and marketing these job-seeking immigrants to prospective employers, and delivering cultural sensitivity workshops to inform and educate the community and employers about multicultural and immigrant issues to foster better and a more open working relationship.

To be eligible for the services, a client must be a Landed Immigrant or Permanent Resident, Canadian Citizen not born in Canada, Convention refugee, or a Refugee claimant. Clients must bring their Landing or Immigration documents to the CDISA office during the first visit.

Funding for CDISA is being provided by the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, Citizenship and Immigration Canada, the Government of Canada through HRSDC, and the Ministry of Citizenship. CDISA gratefully acknowledges the generosity of these funders.
